Evaluation Question 7

From looking back at my preliminary task and looking at what errors i made when creating it, i realised that there were man mistakes that i had not previously noticed.

The first example of this is that the diegetic sounds in the product, especially the backgrounds, were poorly blended and faded between the different shots. (0:04 - 0:08)

As some of the shots start to be recorded, the actors in the shot can be off cue, and fail to get the correct timing for when they enter the shot, speak, etc. This wasn't edited out which was another mistake made (0:16 - 0:17)

The first shot of the entire product shows one of the characters walk towards a door that he is facing until he reaches it. The next two shots still show him walking towards the door. This means that the first shot was too long and should have been edited  (0:03 - 0:08)

The diegetic sound that is heard in the background returns for two shots, because the door in the background is left open for more noise to come through (0:12 - 0:17)

When i saw my final piece once again, i noticed that i could make several improvements.

Transitions, selection and also choice of filters within our product is i clear sign of improvement in confidence in developing our product as well as the overall product becoming better as a whole. These are also good to use when making sequences from thriller genre.

The sounds, both diegetic and non-diegetic, are faded throughout the product far more smoothly and effectively (1:10 - 1:14)

The overall editing and directing of our product was much better as the actors had great timing and acting throughout the scenes

Overall, i have improved in areas such as:

Directing the product better, as i feel that i have improved in the whole making process

Making and adding effective titles that are also needed for the thriller aspect of our media product.

Evaluation Question 7 Planning

In order to plan for my final question, I had to look back at the preliminary task where this all started. From this, i could look at what I have learnt, the areas I have most improved and what I have received from this work. Therefore, I could now answer the final evaluation question.

Evaluation Question 5 Planning

Planning question 5 was looking at my media product and seeing how they attracted the target audience that I had chosen. also I had to think about why I had chosen that target audience specifically and how I went about it to attract them as my audience

Evaluation Question 6 Planning

For questions 6 planning I looked at all the technology I had used when making my media product and I thought about how I went about using it and any obstacles that came with using them. I also thought about how all of the technology was to use and if they were the right technology to create my product

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Our product attracted the audience of men because our opening sequence only contains men. This clearly suggests that the film is masculine based and had a more male dominant target audience. Men are attracted by this as they can identify with the film and they can relate to characters in the film. This was done purposely because we wanted our product to be aimed at males in particular. This is because men are more likely to watch thriller films.

Another way in which our product has attracted the target audience is through the violence throughout our opening sequence. This is because stereotypically men are more attracted to violence in films than women are. Therefore, our target audience is attracted through the violence shown in the film. The violence is mild in the film but it would still attract men because they would want to see violence in the film if that what they look for in a film.

As well as that, our target audience is also attracted to our film as it is quite suspenseful and there is action in a lot of the opening sequence. This means that the action is a key part of the product. The action attracts our audience because men stereotypically wan to see action in films and therefore will want to see our film. The climax in the opening sequence adds to it as it emphasises the action the the sequence and makes the target audience for our product want to watch more.

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies for the process of constructing this product?

Technologies
Firstly, we used a camera to film the entirety of our opening sequence where we had to learn to use this to get the best shows and quality possible so our product was as good as we could possibly make it. We had chosen a high quality camera that Connor owned so that the shots looks as good as possible and we could get the best out of our product. This was good for our group as we learnt how to film in a different way to a phone camera. Also, this was a reliable way of getting good shots that were smooth. We found this quite simple as Connor showed us how to use it and it helped to get the whole group involved in our media product.

Another device that we had to use to create our media product was the apple iMac. This was used for our written tasks along with the editing for the product itself. This was used because they were provided to us due to their software availability and that they are very able to make great media products. This means that it would be a great tool to use when creating our overall product. This was not my first time using an iMac, as i have previously done editing on them before. This means that i was able to use this device with no troubles or dilemmas. It is quite clear that professionally made media products have also been used with similar devices to this one.

Finally, Final Cut Pro is the editing software in which our media product was fully edited. Yet again i have used this software before in creating media products. This software is clearly professional and so it is also evident that more professional companies have made product with this software. It was simple and easy to use with very few bugs. Our product only had a small difficulty saving but that problem was easily fixed. I am happy that I used this software because i am aware of how to use it and i can then manoeuvre my way around it without struggling.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Independent Film Companies
These are usually smaller companies that are not working with other companies, but are creating films entirely on their own budget and by themselves. These have little power in comparison to bigger conglomerate companies. This is because they have much smaller budgets, they have less ways in which to distribute and create advertising for their product. As well as that, they also have a smaller, and more specific target audience. This could be an advantage to the company as the company nows what the target audience wants to see the films. However, it is also seen as a disadvantage because they are rooted to a specific audience and it would be much harder to reach a wider audience.

Conglomerate Film Companies
A conglomerate is a combination of two or more companies that have either come together or are owned by one another that are all part of making a film. An example of this would be disney as they are a parent company that owns a lot of smaller companies that are more specific to an area of making a film. Conglomerates have much bigger budgets and a very wide target audience. This means that distribution is global and the production is much higher. An advantage of this is that the company is much bigger with massive amounts of money which means that reaching a target audience could be easy. A disadvantage of conglomerates would be that some audiences, especially British audiences that are used to independent style of film making may not be interested in the films produced by these companies.

The institution for my media product
I think that an independent company would distribute my product. I think this because our product contains British actors and may suit the style of independent companies that are British. The audience  may want to see this more as it has an original style which is common through independent film companies. However, our film is set in america which may be better for conglomerate companies in the USA. Our media product is not a hollywood blockbuster. Therefore, it is not very likely at all that a conglomerate would pay to distribute my film instead of new hollywood releases. This means that an independent film company would be much more like to distribute my product.

Evaluation Question 4 Planning

The planning of my fourth question was to look and research the film certifications and existing examples so that i could identify the right one for my product and answer the question the the best of my ability. Also, i could see if my product was aimed correctly at the right age rating.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Film Certification
My film is going to be a 15 because the audience for this is quite mature and there is a strong use of drugs and violence in my media product. This is because the audience is mature enough to see the violence of the extract and the use of drugs but the violence isn't too gory or bad for the audience to see. Therefore, the audience is fine to watch this level of maturity in our media product.

Research into similar products
I researched other existing thriller films and their film certificates ranged from a 12A to a 15, which shows that there is already a pre existing audience for the thriller genre. An example would be Limitless which was rated 15 for the drug use, nudity, and violence in the film. This was a great example to use for researching existing products. This is because our media product also contains drug use and violence, making clear similarities to Limitless. Another example of an existing example of media products would be the thriller film called Se7en. However this film is classified as an 18 rated film. This is due to the violence and threat in the film is at a very high level with strong and gory crime scenes with there also being a strong sense of horror and threat running throughout.

Questionnaires
I asked a couple of people what they would expect to see and what not to see in the different categorised age ratings. These would include 12, 12A, 15 and 18. For 12 and 12A, they said that discriminatory language or behaviour must be mild and not aggressive. Drug use must not be frequent and should not be glamorised. Language may be moderate and strong language may be used depending on the manner in which it is used. People said that 15 rated films could include racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language. Drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. As well as that, there are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. 18 rated films are the strongest type of films that are there are not many restrictions of 18 films. A main restriction is that the film may not endorse racist material and may not support the racist themes shown in the film.

Interviews
After interviewing a couple of people in our product's age bracket using my questionnaire, i gained more information about how people view the content of the age rating in our media product. They said that the violence and drug use was just right for the age certification that we decided to put with our product and that the there is not a need to change the selected age rating.

Conclusion
In conclusion, i think that it would be best to make the target audience for my product a 15 rated product and there is not too much of a high level of violence and the drug use is not to an extreme level that would make it an 18 rated film.

Evaluation Question 3 Planning

I planned on approaching this question but researching and thinking about media institutions and why different ones would distribute my media product. I also had to discuss the pros and cons of the different distributions methods and which one i would plan to use.

Evaluation Question 2 Planning

For the planning of my second evaluation question, i looked at our media product and i recognised the representations and stereotypes creates by the social groups in our extract. From this i could discuss what and how our product represents these particular social groups and why we purposely created these representations for the audience.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Firstly, our media product represents men as being powerful and authoritive in our opening sequence. This is because of the Mise en scene used throughout our extract. An example of this would be the costume of the characters and only men are seen throughout this opening sequence.  This creates the clear representations of men that they are powerful because they are mainly wearing costumes that are long coats and caps, making their appearance quite mysterious and discreet. Also, the other protagonist is wearing a suit, which suggests that they are professional and important. This creates a strong image of men in this opening sequence that they look scary to normal people and they look dominant and intimidating to the audience. The man in the suit is also looking important because he is the protagonist of our product. Existing examples of thriller media products usually have a male protagonist, creating a similar representation of males in thriller films as our product. This means that the representations that our media product conveys of men is stereotypical in the media.

Our media product also represents criminals as being both professional and rough. This juxtaposition is clearly shown through the cross cutting between the criminal protagonist in the office and the drug dealers in the central park woods. They are both protagonists but they are portrayed in two completely different ways. The professional criminal is shown in this way to create questions from the audience which is a common convention of the thriller genre. This makes him look like an anti hero which is seen throughout many existing examples of thriller films. However, the drug dealer in the central park woods is seen as rough and intimidating. This is usually seen in existing thriller examples because drug dealers are often seen in the media as bad and unlawful people as well as a burden to society. This is a stereotype in the media because thriller films that include drug deals often portray the drug dealer as criminalistic which is linked with criminals.

The narrative of our opening sequence is quite stereotypical of the triller genre and existing examples in this genre due to there being a climax and a cliffhanger. This is an opening sequence which dives right into the action, which leaves the audience with many questions as to what is going on. There are existing examples such as Limitless (2011) which do the same opening sequence, without properly introducing any of the characters or locations. This therefore leaves the audience with questions making them want to continue to watch the film to find out more. This narrative creates the representations of men that they are mysterious. This is done purposely because we want the audience to ask questions about the opening sequence so that they carry on watching. This is a common convention of the thriller genre and so it makes a stereotypical representation of men.
